Weather Forecasts and Sudden Increases in Wind Velocity

The weather reports had forecast winds of 15 to 25 during the day but the lake was almost flat most of the morning. The wind actually started to come up just before noon but within an hour was averaging 32 mph with the highest gust during the hour between noon and 1 p.m. at 46 mph.

When you are considering going for a sail, one thing to remember is that the wind speed over the water can be twice the velocity over land. When you listen to weather forecasts for the general area consider the likelihood that they may dramatically underestimate the strength of the wind over the water. If the wind is moderate when you check out, plan your sail to remain in the vicinity of the club so if the wind increases suddenly you can quickly get back to the club slip and the safety of the marina. In our classes we recommend sailing on a beam reach across the lake and returning on a reciprocal beam reach directly back toward the marina.  This is the figure of 8 pattern we practice on the first and second day of classes on the water.

You should also know that the weather radio now works in the new club room.  If you listen to the complete report you will eventually hear the wind speed at NOAA Sandpoint. This will help you compare your own estimates to the actual wind speed.  However, remember that Sandpoint is in the lee for winds from the SW and, to some degree, from the S. Therefore consider that the wind speed in open water may be considerably stronger than NOAA reports.

J/22 Rigging – sea hood

I want to change the rigging for the outhaul, vang and cunnungham on both Js

At the same time we can replace and maybe reposition the blocks for the spinnaker controls.

Here are some ideas from other web sites

New Club office! We have moved!

Starting March 1st. The Club has a new office location. The boats are in the same place and the procedures are the same.

As noted by our illustrious President Mike:

The Neptune Sailing Club has moved its offices to a new location.  Briefly, the landlord of our previous office space found a commercial tenant willing to pay a higher rent than we were paying and terminated our lease.  However, thanks to some fantastic work by committed club members (including all members of the Board), we have a great new location.

As you may know, office space near our marina is both scarce and expensive.  Our new space has comparative benefits and shortcomings relative to our old space.  This new location is slightly further away from the marina (~ 50 yards).  It is smaller and does not have the look and feel of an “office building”.  On the other hand, in this time of rising costs for the Club, we have reduced rent by 57%.  We now have stability because the lease is locked in for 5 years.  In the event that we choose to move before the expiration of our lease, we have negotiated the right to terminate at any time with 60 days notice.  Finally, folks, well… we think the new place has charm.  It is affectionately called ‘the Cave’ or ‘Neptune’s Cave’ by those who have worked so hard to get it ready and by others who have visited.

You can find ‘the Cave’ just north of the rear building entrance for the old club location.  Look for the Neptune Sailing Club sign just a few (4-5) doors away.  Use the same lockbox combination to access the door key.

We hope that you find ‘the Cave’ to be a great new home for our Club.
